Word Counter & Character Counter

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs instantly. Also shows reading time, speaking time and your top keywords.

What counts as a word?

Different tools count differently, which is why numbers rarely match. This tool counts whitespace-separated tokens — the most common convention. A hyphenated compound like state-of-the-art counts as one word, while don't counts as one word as well.

Why character limits matter

Different platforms impose different caps, and going over means your content gets truncated:

PlatformLimit
X / Twitter post280 characters
Meta title~60 characters
Meta description~155 characters
Instagram caption2,200 characters
LinkedIn post3,000 characters
SMS (single)160 characters

Reading and speaking time

Estimates use 200 words per minute for reading and 130 words per minute for speaking. Speaking is slower because it includes pauses, emphasis and pronunciation. For presentations, budget 1–2 minutes per slide.

Keyword density

The keyword list shows which words appear most often after removing common English stopwords. It is useful for checking that a blog post actually focuses on its topic, and for spotting repetition while editing.
