Where lorem ipsum comes from

The text is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. A garbled version was produced in the 1500s when a printer scrambled the type, and it became standard filler for type specimens.

The word "lorem" itself is the first two syllables of dolorem ipsum — "pain itself" — which is not meaningful Latin. It was never intended to be read, only to occupy space with a Latin-like rhythm.

When to use it

Placeholder text is for layout and design, not for content:

  • Mockups and wireframes
  • Testing how an article looks at a target length
  • Measuring how a page handles long vs short entries
  • Filling a database with realistic-shaped data

When not to use it

Never ship lorem ipsum to production. It reads as unfinished, it confuses screen readers, and search engines treat it as low-value duplicate content. It also tells visitors nothing about what your product does.

A better practice

Use real sentences from your own domain. If you are building a recipe app, use actual recipe descriptions. Placeholder text shaped like your real content is far more useful for design review, because it exposes layout problems that generic Latin hides.
